At the center of the mesmerizing rolling fields, resided a young shepherd. His existence was mostly pure, simple yet virtuous. His main role was mainly to care for his flock of sheep.

Their gentle baas and the murmuring of the wind among the single tree on the hilltop were his main associates. Day after day, guarding his wards inculcated in him a notion of quiet fulfillment.

Yet, there were the occasional moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would pine for companionship. On one such day from sheer monotony, the shepherd boy conceived a naughty scheme.

Stories of wolves prowling on sheep had been around for a while in the hamlet. So, the boy opted to used this fear and played a prank on the villagers.

One afternoon he raced into the village shouting “Wolf! There is a wolf attacking my sheep!” The scared villagers sprinted up the hills to offer assistance but discovered no wolf.

The boy laughed at the confusion on their faces. This prank persisted for a couple of more days. But, one day, a real wolf actually charge at the flock. The shepherd boy ran for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.

Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but could read more rescue only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he returned to the town only to receive a scolding on honesty and the consequences of crying wolf.

The story of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the value of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the dangers of crying wolf. Moreover, it stresses how trust once broken, is hard to earn back. It's a story as pertinent today as it was in the past.
